Horizontal Directional Drilling

Directional drilling, also known as horizontal directional drilling or HDD, is a specialist trenchless method used to install underground pipes, ducts and cables without the need for open-cut trenching.

It is particularly useful where excavation would be difficult, disruptive, expensive or unsuitable. This includes routes beneath roads, driveways, landscaped areas, railways, pathways, sensitive ground and existing structures.

Moling Experts provide directional drilling services across Southampton, Hampshire, West Sussex, Surrey, London and much of the South of the UK. With specialist equipment and years of experience, we can help with a wide range of domestic, commercial and utility installation projects.

How Directional Drilling Works

The process begins with a carefully planned pilot bore. Using tracking and steering technology, the drill is guided along a required underground route while avoiding surface disruption and known obstacles.

Once the pilot bore has been completed, the hole can be enlarged using a reaming head. The new pipe, duct or cable sleeve is then pulled back through the bore path and connected as required.

This approach provides an efficient way to install underground services while reducing reinstatement work, surface damage, waste material and disruption to the surrounding area.

What Directional Drilling Is Used For

Directional drilling is ideal when underground services need to be installed below obstacles or in locations where traditional trenching would cause unnecessary disruption.

This method is commonly used for:

  • Installing water pipes beneath driveways, paths, roads and landscaped areas
  • Installing electric cables, ducting and utility routes
  • Working in areas where open excavation would be too disruptive or costly
  • Projects near existing buildings, gardens, highways or sensitive ground
  • Accurate underground installation with reduced reinstatement work
  • Domestic, commercial and light utility projects

By choosing directional drilling, you benefit from a cleaner, faster and more efficient alternative to traditional open trench excavation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some common questions about directional drilling. If you are unsure whether it is suitable for your project, please get in touch and we can advise.

What is directional drilling?

Directional drilling is a trenchless method used to install underground pipes, ducts and cables along a controlled bore path without digging a long open trench.

When is directional drilling useful?

It is useful when services need to pass beneath roads, driveways, paths, gardens, landscaped areas, existing structures or sensitive ground where open excavation would be disruptive or impractical.

Can directional drilling reduce reinstatement costs?

Yes. Because the surface is disturbed far less than traditional trenching, there is usually less reinstatement work needed afterwards.

What areas do Moling Experts cover?

Moling Experts cover Southampton, Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex, Berkshire, Wiltshire, Dorset, London and many surrounding areas across the South of the UK.

Can you advise if drilling or moling is better for my project?

Yes. If you are unsure whether directional drilling, impact moling or another trenchless method is the best option, we can review your project details and recommend the most practical solution.
