Moling or trenchless digging is a method of digging underground, often used in pipe repair and installations.

It removes the need to dig open trenches – helping to minimise disruption to the work site, reducing accidents caused by having large open holes in the ground. This saves time and money by using low impact moling techniques.

It involves digging small entry and exit holes, up to 10 metres apart. The steel cylinder “mole”, powered by compressed air, drills through the ground to create space for new pipes to be fitted. This method has become the preferred method and replacing open trenches for pipe installs.

What Is Moling?

Moling is a trenchless method of installing underground pipes with minimal surface disruption. Instead of digging long trenches, we use a compact pneumatic machine (called a “mole”) that burrows through the soil from one small access pit to another. Once the path is created, a new water pipe is pulled through the channel — all without disturbing driveways, gardens, or landscaping.

This no-dig solution is perfect for:

  • Replacing old or leaking water supply pipes

  • Upgrading from lead or steel to modern MDPE pipework

  • Installing new pipes to outbuildings, extensions, or annexes

  • Improving water pressure by upgrading pipe diameter
