Impact Moling Contractors

Impact moling is a trenchless method of installing underground pipes, ducts and service lines with minimal surface disruption. Instead of excavating a long trench, a pneumatic piercing tool known as an impact mole is launched from a small entry pit and driven through the ground to create a bore.

Once the bore has been formed, the new pipe, duct or service line can be installed through the route. This makes impact moling a practical solution for house connections, water supply pipe replacement, service duct installation and routes beneath driveways, paths, gardens and other valuable surfaces.

Moling Experts provide impact moling services across Southampton, Hampshire, West Sussex, Surrey, London and much of the South of the UK.

How Impact Moling Works

Impact moling works by using compressed air to power a pneumatic mole through the ground. The mole displaces and compacts the surrounding soil as it moves forward, creating a narrow bore without the need for major excavation.

The process usually begins with a launch pit and a receiving pit. The mole is carefully aligned to follow the planned route, then driven through the ground towards the target pit. Once the bore is complete, the pipe or duct can be installed through the route.

This method can be especially useful where a pipe needs to pass beneath a driveway, path, garden, road edge or other surface where open trenching would cause unnecessary disruption.

What Impact Moling Is Used For

Impact moling is a versatile trenchless solution for smaller underground installation projects where disruption needs to be kept to a minimum.

It is commonly used for:

  • Water supply pipe replacement and new water pipe installation
  • House service connections and underground service routes
  • Installing ducts or pipework beneath driveways, paths and gardens
  • Crossings beneath valuable or finished surfaces
  • Projects where access is restricted or excavation needs to be reduced
  • Domestic and light commercial trenchless installations

By reducing the need for open trenches, impact moling can help save time, reduce reinstatement work and leave the surrounding area much cleaner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some common questions about impact moling. If you are unsure whether it is suitable for your project, please get in touch and we can advise.

What is impact moling?

Impact moling is a trenchless installation method that uses a pneumatic mole to create a bore through the ground without digging a long open trench.

When is impact moling useful?

It is useful for installing water pipes, ducts and service lines beneath driveways, paths, gardens and other surfaces where open excavation would be disruptive.

Does impact moling reduce reinstatement work?

Yes. Because only small launch and receiving pits are usually required, impact moling can significantly reduce surface damage and reinstatement compared with traditional trenching.

What areas do Moling Experts cover?

Moling Experts cover Southampton, Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex, Berkshire, Wiltshire, Dorset, London and many surrounding areas across the South of the UK.

Can you advise if moling or directional drilling is better?

Yes. If you are unsure whether impact moling, directional drilling or another trenchless method is the best option, we can review your project details and recommend the most practical solution.
